Conflict Violence
Much of the upsurge in armed violence in Nigeria since 2009 has been driven by conflict in the North East of the country. Conflict in this region has garnered international attention in recent years with the rise of Boko Haram, a violent Islamist group primarily operating in the North East, alongside other affiliated groups. Reports of violent Islamist activity are often attributed to Boko Haram, but may in fact represent the actions of a more diverse range of emerging militant groups and a wide range of affiliates and members, including reports of forced recruitment and the targeting of vulnerable youth.
